I was delighted that following R4U’s call for an extraordinary Meeting of Uttlesford District Council to look urgently at the present refugee crisis, the Chair and Chief Executive acted swiftly and the meeting took place last Wednesday evening. At the council meeting, I jointly proposed a motion which calls for UDC to work with other agencies to ensure that the district plays a full part in the housing and support for those refugees who are granted asylum and come to Uttlesford.
We are privileged to live in such a prosperous part of the country and can afford to contribute better than others, whilst still protecting the less well-off in our own society.
Whilst proposing that motion I asked for the Task Group, which will oversee the settlement here, to look at how we can play the greatest possible part in taking refugees.
